Although Spoolia collectively has spent its fair share of years in school, we’re always trying to learn more. On a recent Saturday, we traveled to Rosslyn to learn more about the ins and outs of hand lettering from the expert, Ken Barber, resident type designer and letterer of House Industries in Delaware. Along with fellow ADCMW designers, we set off to turn “Washington” into something beautiful.

Time to Celebrate
The holidays are underway and a new year is fast approaching, so Spoolia is putting its party hat on. We’re also celebrating a great year of design work as we received FOUR American Graphic Design Awards from Graphic Design USA!
Making Old New Again
The owner of Urban Tastes Home & Furnishings, Megan Adams, had a dilemma. She had been running Urban Tastes, a home delivery catering service, for a few years but found the business model tough. In addition her love for refurbishing old furniture and looking for unique finds at weekend sales had grown to a borderline obsession. It was time to re-think her company and branding. Thats where we came in.
Coming Soon
Spoolia has been working with My Husband Cooks Hospitality Group on two new restaurant identities: Ginny’s and Esquire Dog. Both will open at 3000 Duke Street, just outside of Old Town Alexandria.
Eater’s site mentioned the projects today so we thought it would be a good time to share the teaser splash pages with everyone directly:

Esquire Dog and Ginny’s are going to be offering badly needed dining options to the 3000 block of Duke Street. We can’t wait to sample the high-end hot dog creations at Esquire Dog and spend a long afternoon dining on southern brasserie fair at Ginny’s. More branding bits to come as the restaurants get closer to the opening. Stay tuned.
Summer in the City: Mini Golf at the Building Museum
Last week our studio mate, District Design, invited us to The National Building Museum to put a few holes of Mini Golf . . . Mini Golf ?/#? . . . yep mini golf at the National Building Museum. District Design actually designed and built one of the holes. You might have seen it featured in this weekends Washington Post Kids section. Spoolia loved this exhibit. What a great way to let local Architects and city folks get in a little frivolous summer play time and show off the creative juices at the same time. Check out a few shots of our favorite holes:
Stand Up for Real Food
The statistics are in, we have some problems folks. Childhood obesity is an issue that is not only affecting millions of americans today but it is looking like this will also be a huge burden on our society for years to come.
AIGA 50 Round Up
We had a great time at the AIGA 50 last night. Spoolia was of course honored to be part of the 50 and grateful for the Design for Good recognition but we also enjoyed seeing all the great work. Spending an evening at the Corcoran is always a lovely time. These were some of the wonderful sights from the evening:
Design For Good
Spoolia was thrilled just to be a part of this years DC AIGA 50, so it was a great surprise to learn that we were the recipients of the Design for Good Award for our contribution to the Haiti Poster Project.
Dear New Neighbors…
District Design and Spoolia spent the other weekend crafting a few personalized notes to our new neighbors and posting them in the windows for all to view. Everyone was probably most excited about the “Luca’s Snow Cones” note, hopefully debuting this weekend so please stroll on by.
The Next Generation
Spoolia was very excited to participate in Career Day at MICA in Baltimore. The next generation of designers are hard at work jumping into portfolio execution in addition to making websites and print materials to show off a unique skill set. We noticed that everyone had at least one info graphic in their book. A trend that reflects our growing need for quick information absorption. Our advice to the MICA grads is keep working hard. Even the smallest project can be designed with excellence.
