The owner of Urban Tastes Home & Furnishings, Megan Adams, had a dilemma. She had been running Urban Tastes, a home delivery catering service, for a few years but found the business model tough. In addition her love for refurbishing old furniture and looking for unique finds at weekend sales had grown to a borderline obsession. It was time to re-think her company and branding. Thats where we came in.
When Megan came to Spoolia with her new business idea we encouraged her to stick with the Urban Tastes name as she already had some local brand recognition. In addition we thought “Urban Tastes” aptly described the collection of up-cycled furnishings that Megan planned on selling. The name also provided an open ended definition, allowing her to expand her line to home accessories (recently added) and other new interests.
The first step was rethinking the logo. We had previously discussed reworking the old Urban Tastes logo and had explored a new execution inspired by the stamps found on wooden food crates. When the business model changed we went back to the drawing board, moving away from food imagery, but found that the stamp style look, also often found on the under side of vintage furniture, still worked. The next step was finding the right visual reference and shape.
After playing around with a pineapple and series of hinges and iron inspired flourishes the “key” to the final logo was actually settling on a key as the icon to represent home goods.
A slightly worn look was appropriate for the type treatment and logo background as well as the for the website. Megan’s own handiwork is seen all over the site, and if the items are not altered by Megan herself they are made with care by one of her collaborators.
We were thrilled when Megan suggested we carry Spoolia’s first product line on her site. Although the look of our bags are a bit different then the typical Urban Tastes fare, the Up-Cycled Banner Bags (crafted for us by Happenstance By Chance) capture the same spirit of re-use and hand-made craft as the rest of the Urban Tastes collection. The lightly worn banners have been executed in three styles: a hand bag, shoulder bag and i-pad case. We were thrilled to see the bags featured with Megan’s new pillow line and other unique items.
